William Shatner has spoken out about the surprise cancellation of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
"Star Trek exists in more than one world. It exists in the fantasy of science fiction - weird and wonderful things that play unimaginable possibilities of exploration and human endeavor," Shatner wrote on Twitter.
"But it also exists in the fantasy of human beings, the perfection of human beings, the exploration that human beings have made since the dawn of time and the continuing exploration - physically mentally and morally. It's that aspect of Star Trek that I've always loved, to look at something physically that doesn't exist now by these talented writers & designers but also to tackle the eternal human questions the agonies, the ecstasies. Star Trek should exist for a long time to come based on those truths. I for one would love to see its continuity. It’s with sorrow that I hear about the cancellation of the new Star Trek series."
After the season 1 finale aired, it was announced that the show would end after season 2. The show sits at an 87% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, but has a 51% audience score, suggesting it was probably a bit polarizing with fans of the franchise.
The series revolves around Starfleet Academy, which opened its doors for the "first time in over a century" to admit "individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental, and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor, and devotion to a cause greater than themselves." The cast includes Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, Holly Hunter, Oded Fehr, Tig Notaro, Zoe Steiner, and Robert Picado.
Shatner, of course, originated the role of Captain James T Kirk in the original Star Trek series back in 1966. Paul Wesley currently plays Kirk on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which is one of the many Star Trek spin-offs that is still ongoing. We don't see this franchise dying off any time soon.
