Some people seem to be living in an altered reality with a different outlook on common sense and norms. Or, do I dare to say, with no common sense at all? And thanks to the internet, we are able to get in contact with all sorts of people, where no one is safe from confusing conversations and weird interactions.
This time on Bored Panda we will explore the text exchanges between people who sell or buy on the Facebook marketplace, a place where anyone can add items for sale, may it be your unworn dress or a couch that is being replaced. Anything goes. It is a great way to stay green and earn some extra cash.
Though nothing is as simple as it sounds. Your potential customer might end up calling you names - such as heartless, cold, and uncompromising due to not selling your item for half the price. So if it so happens that you will be selling items online, be prepared for anything.

Something that is common throughout these texts is a behavior designed to exploit, control, or otherwise influence others to one’s advantage, which is the definition of manipulation. Sometimes people use manipulation technics while being aware of it, but a lot of the time, they have learned that behavior unconsciously and perceive it as normal behavior.
That is still no excuse for using other people, but just something to have in mind and maybe see whether you might be using somewhat manipulative techniques in your surroundings too.
Some of the common manipulation tricks used to get others to do more than they probably would for you, as shared on WebMD, are guilt, complaining, comparing, lying, denying, feigning ignorance or innocence, blame, and mind games.
Whether the intent is good or bad, manipulation is still an attempt to undermine your rational thinking.
Since internet communication has become more popular over the years, we can notice manipulation being used there too, may it be in the comments under a post or people over private messaging trying to guilt trip you into selling items half-priced. It can kind of be compared with trolling or trolls online, though their only goal is to upset and confuse other people rather than gain actual value.
In the article on PsychCentral, there are listed 29 examples of manipulative approaches in text messaging, which include being inappropriately sarcastic and making false accusations, which you will notice some people use here.
Obviously, it is quite easy to work around people trying to manipulate you through such short interactions since you might never see or text them again. You can easily block them and say your goodbyes. Hopefully, they will not be coming back to haunt you, but your interaction will surely make a story to remember.

A friend put up an add for a couch for free if come picking it up before he throw it away due to lack of space. He made sure to say he wont hold it more than one day. A woman answered and they arrange she was going to arrive at 18:00. No one came, so he texted her multiple times asking if she was late, or changed her mind. He texted her again the day after and gave her a last chance, still no answer. He waited an extra day, but then called a pick up from a 2nd hand store that came and picked it up. The next day after that, at around 20.00 the doorbell rang, and there was the woman, coming to pick up "her" couch. She got very upset that he had send HER couch away, and was very unpleasant, and he had to tell her to leave. Next day, he got angry threats from a man, perhaps husband, telling him to go bring THEIR couch back, or else. My friend asked how smart they think it is to leave threats from their personal phone and that he will show this to the police. Never heard from them again.

This reminds me of a time I was selling on Depop. I was having a clear out, donated what I could and put the rest on Depop. I wasn't looking to make a profit, just wanted some pieces to go to a good home and so I only charged p+p. Posted a listing for 2 pairs of earrings - £4 total for postage, fees and extra packaging because they were delicate. Someone messaged me saying they only want 1 of the pairs, would I sell for £1.50 total. I explained that £1.50 wouldn't cover the postage and I'd essentially be paying her to take them. She replied "You can't run a business with that attitude. Your loss". I replied "You're not getting it - if I sold them to you it really would be my loss" and blocked her. Some people!
