Lionel Messi has become the leading goalscorer in World Cup history after scoring Argentina ’s opener in their clash with Austria on Monday.
Messi came into the game tied with Germany’s Miroslav Klose on 16 World Cup goals in his illustrious career.
He missed an early chance to break the record when he put a penalty wide inside the opening 10 minutes.
However, Messi did not have to wait too much longer to make history as he fired Argentina in front in the 38th minute.
Messi has now scored four goals at this year’s tournament already, having scored a hat-trick against Algeria last week.
