You are 100% correct. I'm sorry you had to live through that and hope your family has progressed to a place where they can contribute positively to your life, or are completely out of your life if they're not there.

No matter how frustrated you are, it's abusive to physically take it out on someone, and that includes shoving. A mistake is still abuse. SIL may not have meant to hurt the kid, but she still should not have physically shoved her child except to move them out of danger in an emergency. It was an abusive act. Is the SIL a continual abuser? I doubt it. But she did injure her child, and she needs to deal with her self-control and her impulses so she doesn't do it again.
Me too, Lakota. Back then, that wasn't considered abuse though. It was "discipline."
