Oh God, this sounds exactly like my mother. She *knows* I have diagnosed anxiety, she knows I'm trying to fix it. And yet she can't help herself from needling all the time, pointing out things that I don't need to begin worrying about. Apparently I have small teeth and small elbows. (This is the nicest part of her behaviour, but it's the part that aligns best with this article)

Mom Abandons 11 Y.O. After One Tantrum, He Ruins Her Engagement Party 6 Years Later

I'm biased here but speaking from experience it can be totally jarring when an overly strict, overprotective, helicopter parent suddenly turns into a 'I don't care, do what you like' type. I'd imagine it's even worse to deal with during puberty. His mother also just 'got on with her life' without him, presumably doing everything she would have done if she hadn't been burdened with a child; he's old enough to pick up on that. I don't agree with his behaviour at the engagement party, but this should have been sorted out by the adults long ago. As the first few comments said - he was a child, he was struggling, they needed professionals to help them through it.

A bit off-topic but I find this shocking "To pay for her insulin". Holy F*****g s**t what a nightmarish dystopia... Excuse the language but to someone born in a pathetically poor Third World country... This is unbelievable to me... Because in my original country INSULIN IS SUBSIDIZED!!! 3 generations of people living under a literal dictatorship... YET Every single diabetic person who needed insulin got it for a symbolic sum of money... Like 5 dollar equivalent... HOW is this logical??? You know at first I did not believe this... I thought it was an internet rumor especially when I was a kid and teenager... I could not fathom that this could be real for the richest country in the entire world...My country revolted against said dictatorship... So why is it that Americans who got it worse is so many other ways are passive to this degree? You have the guns that we did not... It makes no sense... Now you are told the guy is a "terrorist"? I previously spent decades being shut down by people if I even tried to start describing my mother's antics, being told "Buuuut she's your MUH-THUH!", oddly usually with that exact inflection.

The SIL is ridiculous and the rest of the family doesn't sound much better. It takes a lot of nerve to give back a handmade gift because you don't like the color. He can't afford the stuff on the list so now they are out of luck on getting anything else. Just because you don't like the color doesn't mean you can't use it. I'm one of the people that hate gender reveals. Why get everything for a boy or girl when the next baby can be the other. When I had mine there was lots of green or yellow or white prints that didn't matter. You could also get boy or girl stuff. My 2nd baby I had to go for an ultrasound because they thought the baby was breech and yep. We didn't tell anybody it was a boy, picked my c-section date that day. There was no doubt at all that it was a boy, he was in the perfect position.

Switch the genders and feminists would be up in arms at the thought that a popular movie has a character of one gender who had the audacity to want to be special, that they went about it a stupid way (because it's a comedy) and that luckily the original ruling gender got their places back because the upstarts are so dumb they didn't realise they were being played. And don't forget there's one of the opposite gender allowed in the main character's group because they don't conform to the gender stereotypes and are thus considered acceptable, because Lord knows you can't be friends with anyone who's different from you.
