The feeling of entitlement is ridiculous! My grandparents went into the nursing home and my cousin asked if he could "borrow" my grandfather's small pickup occasionally to save on gas (since it wasn't being used anyway). He and his current wife both had huge gas guzzler SUVs and didn't like paying the gas on them. My grandfather would NEVER tell a grandchild no so he agreed My cousin basically took it home and used it all the time - while the insurance was coming out of my grandparent's social security every month!

Actually, I get this. When she was 5, my stepdaughter's mom would send her in clothes that were too small, too large, with holes or stains, or didn't match. If we bought her clothes and she took them home, we'd never see them again. About a year or so in, I asked my husband to let me buy her clothes that she kept at our house. When she arrived, she'd wear what I got her that actually fit and were in good condition. When she went home, she had to change back into her home clothes that she came in. Sometimes we would get her things she could take home, but we knew we might never see it again. Sure enough, by the time she was in late elem/middle school, her mom was taking her clothes that we bought her. Sigh. Now, we have full custody so it's no longer an issue.

Thank you @Sarah. I agree. That is a disgusting thought and these people who keep talking about abortion or not having kids after a special needs child are mechanical and probably have no heart. ALL children are gifts… not burdens. And if people would just show compassion (like the 10 year does) then this world would be so much better! It’s good to know when to say no. And Izzy’s mom did that for her daughter. But to treat a disabled child like a disease the way so many are doing here is pathetic! So sick!

Some schools are funded to handle special needs children. My brother is a 4th grade teacher and his school does provide support. Obviously not all schools are the same.

I have an autistic younger sister and my parents never meant for me to fall into a caregiver role but it happens. They are your sibling and you want them to be happy and sometimes understand them better than your parents. The mom isn't an a*****e its life.

I have three nieces (ages 13, 11, 9). 13 has special needs, 11 and 9 do not. 11 and 9 will always have a very different perspective than kids with only typical siblings. It can sometimes be very difficult but, there are also unique rewards. They are incredibly kind and understanding with other kids they know who face similar challenges as their sister. They are NOT however made to feel in any way responsible for those other kids. It is one thing to be a good and kind friend. It is entirely another to be expected to be a support person or a caregiver. No child should feel that they are somehow responsible for another child. That's the job of adults.

Oh hell people calm down! Unless you have a child like Maisie or Luke you have no idea how hard it is on the whole family! Older as well as younger "average" siblings are effected by the "not average" child and as in ANY OTHER FAMILY ACROSS THE CONTRY all family members work to keep the family going in the same direction day in and day out whether they realize it or not! My youngest is autistic and if it were not for my husband and her older siblings I would have never made it out of bed every day. This situation is no different than a sibling learning ASL for a hearing limited sibling or holding the hand of a visually limited sibling. The OP did not say that she straps the whole responsibility of raising an autistic child on her older daughter. Her daughter "helps" just like and other older child in any other family. OP, I know exactly what you are talking about and where you are coming from. Don't let these idiots tell you that you are a bad parent. You did right & keep it up!

Mom Lists Reasons She Won't Put Her Daughter In Daycare

I think a bigger question is the privilege, luck, good fortune whatever you want to call it that you can stay at home with your child. Most people don't live a life where only one income can provide for a family. I mean in some areas, two incomes don't even cut without subsidization of some sort. I understand where this woman is coming from but all it does is foster a level of shame and guilt on parents who can't afford to make that choice or the choice they can afford isn't a prime caring facility. It would be like people who say "I will never send my parents to a nursing home, that is why I have private around the clock care for them in house." Well bully for you that you and your parents can afford that. Some people can't afford around the clock care and they physically, emotionally, and financially can't stay home 24/7 to provide that care themselves. It's a lot more nuanced than just saying daycare is bad don't do it.

Its almost like they are not your private babysitter 🙄 Some of the points about background checks and staffing levels are really important, and right to be concerned with. But then adding in that they won't tailer when children have naps, when they play, what they eat etc to the desires of each individual parent just makes her sound entitled and dilutes serious points.
