A sense of entitlement is virtually a belief that someone deserves special treatment or recognition for something they didn't really earn. Simply put, people with this mindset feel that the world owes them without having to give anything in return.

Entitlement is a narcissistic personality trait and while we don't know exactly how it develops, some possible factors are:

• The environment a person grows up in; 
• The way their parents treated them; 
• Whether adults solved their problems for them;
• How they are treated by authority figures.

Since entitled people often see themselves as superior to others, it's not a surprise that this way of thinking affects their interpersonal relationships. 

When you believe you should get better treatment than others or that the rules simply don't apply to you, you're more likely to suffer in the long term. When you believe you aren't getting what you're owed, an entitlement mentality can result in:

• Conflict in relationships;
• Unhappiness;
• Disappointment;
• Depression.

Your career may suffer as well. Yes, entitled people often interview well and can land leadership roles because of their confidence, however, they often lack team spirit and avoid problem-solving in the workplace; most of their decisions are self-serving, and this can quickly become apparent to their co-workers. 

What's more, as these reviews show, feeling entitled to something and not getting what you want can reinforce the mindset instead of shattering it. This often follows a vicious 3-step cycle:

1. When you're entitled, you're always vulnerable to the threat of unmet expectations.

2. When your expectations are not met, it can lead to dissatisfaction and other emotions like anger and a sense of being cheated. 

3. When you're distressed, you try to fix the situation and console yourself. This results in self-reassurance that you deserve everything you've ever wanted, which reinforces the same entitled behavior.  

It's all fun and games when we're "meeting" entitled people via r/ChoosingBeggars. But having someone like this in your life can be a really exhausting experience. While there might be no easy way to resolve a situation with them, if you decide to have a talk, there are several points you should hit.

1. Everything happens for a reason. What's theirs? Not that you have to meet their needs (as already mentioned, their needs may be unreasonable), but giving them a chance to be heard could halt the entitled behavior. Life is comprised of causes and conditions, maybe you can unearth the underlying cause and prevent further entitled behavior from occurring.

2. Not everyone who behaves like a jerk recognizes the way they come off. In fact, they may be oblivious that their behavior is creating a negative impression of them. Everyone at the core wants to be content and our actions are usually geared toward that end result. But it's the route they have taken that's the problem. If you can diplomatically explain that their method is not yielding the desired result, you might be able to get them to at least reconsider their course.

3. "Let me tell you how you're making me feel." This one, of course, depends on what kind of relationship you have with the person. Within the right environment, this type of exchange can benefit both parties. Even if their intention was pure, they can't dismiss the way they are making you feel. Hopefully, realizing they are annoying and irritating you will be an eye-opening experience.

4. Are you seeing things that aren’t there? Perception is tricky. Though you might feel in your heart there is entitled behavior at play, someone else might perceive the situation completely differently. Find a trusted third party to give an outside perspective. As each of our lives consists of different emotional backgrounds and experiences, we are going to react to behavior differently. What you might see as entitled behavior, another might perceive as totally neutral.

But if all of the above fails, you want to protect yourself from being taken advantage of. Setting some boundaries might be useful. Name your limits. Reiterate and uphold them. Don't be afraid to say no, communicate when they cross the line, and stay consistent.
