The Luftwaffe came in waves for most of a day and turned a city of several hundred thousand people into a burning field of rubble. Estimates of the civilian dead from that raid alone run into the tens of thousands, and the figure has never been settled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What followed is why the name still carries weight. The Germans took most of the city and could not take the last of it: a strip of factory floor, cellar and riverbank against the Volga, held through the autumn by Vasily Chuikov&#8217;s 62nd Army. The fighting moved indoors. Men died over stairwells and over a single floor of a grain elevator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, on November 19, two Soviet fronts hit the Romanian armies guarding the German flanks, closed a ring behind the Sixth Army in four days, and left roughly a quarter of a million men inside it with the winter coming and an airlift that never delivered what had been promised. Friedrich Paulus surrendered on January 31, 1943, the day after Hitler made him a field marshal on the reasoning that no German field marshal had ever been taken alive. The last pocket gave up on February 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The photographs below run in order, from a commanders&#8217; conference in August to a fountain left standing in a wrecked square.
